Are You Focused in Your Giving?

Lately, I’ve been obsessed with learning to be more effective with my time and to-dos. For me, the key to this is focus. I’ve spent way too much of my life being a multi-tasker, and it has often led to feelings of burn-out. That frazzled feeling makes me want to avoid that task, any task altogether. What does all of this have to do with giving?

I often meet people who want to get involved with a cause or a nonprofit but have no idea where to start. Sometimes, they describe the process as exhausting or overwhelming. After further discussion, I realized it’s likely that they don’t have a clear idea of how they want to help. So, they continue to put it off.

No more procrastination!

If this is the year that you’re growing in your giving, here are three things to help focus your giving efforts:

Determine what you are willing to donate.

Are we talking time, talent, or treasure? When I was single, I spent a lot of time volunteering versus donating. Now, because of work and the kids, the situation is flipped and donations are my main contribution. Think about your situation, pick a lane, and focus on that to begin with. You can always expand and do more.

Decide what cause really gets you going.

There are a zillion and a half important issues, worthy organizations, and groups making an impact in the world. If you care more about inner-city literacy than saving the rainforests, that is okay. Focusing your interests will make you more valuable in that area and also help you stay active and interested.

Devise a plan to help.

I know what you’re thinking. Planning = Work = Stress. However, this plan will help you avoid that overwhelmed feeling. In Step 1, did you decide that you’d rather donate than volunteer? Then, make a plan on how often you will accomplish that. Ideas might include setting up monthly donations, raising $500 in an annual walk, or attending an annual fundraiser? If you know what you have to do, it’s becomes easier to incorporate into your lifestyle ahead of time.

Like other positive habits, living charitably is something that must be cultivated. And, it requires some effort on our part. These three steps will help you focus your giving and translate your intentions into action.
