2009 MLK Day "Celebration of Service"

Every year, Chicago Cares, an organization which promotes Chicago volunteerism, coordinates the Celebration of Service event, in honor of Dr. King’s birthday holiday. On January 17th, over 4,000 volunteers come together on the day to volunteer at various city-wide service projects. Past projects have included painting apartments for low-income residents, cleaning up public spaces, or spending time with seniors. Participants begin the day with breakfast at the United Center and then are transported by bus to their respective volunteer site!

You can register by yourself or with a team, but the deadline to sign up is Friday, January 9th! Seeing as how I am voluntarily staying in Chicago (vs. hitting up the inauguration), I will definitely be doing my part to make a difference in my fair city!

Welcome to 2009!!!

Happy New Year, folks! I hope your NYE festivities were safe and filled with those you love (or at least like)! I had an absolute blast with my ladies at The Art of Celebration Charity Gala. The venue was ultra-classy, and the free-flowing Ciroc/Don Julio/Nuvo certainly added to the “ambiance” of the night…Lol!

As the year progresses, I promise to continue to expand and build the blog, to really fulfill the purpose and mission! So stay tuned, and thanks again for stopping by!

"Tue" Fabulous

2008 is almost over and I am SOOO thrilled to be going into 2009. I’m not going to lie to anyone…I’m definitely feeling myself walking into January 1st! Whatever you do on Wednesday night, remember to learn from your past and be grateful for everyday that you’re blessed with! Now, for your small dose of fabulousity…

Ten Small Ways To Give More Next Year

As we close the chapter on this year, most of us will make declarations of how to better ourselves moving forward. Of course, I’m going to urge you to incorporate more giving into your routine. If you don’t take anything else away from this blog, I want you to understand that it doesn’t take much to lead a charitable lifestyle. The opportunities are everywhere!

Here are ten (of many) easy and small ways that you can give more next year.

New Years Eve is the perfect time to set new goals. How about giving more?

"Tue" Fabulous

Hey, hey, hey…I’m dedicating this week’s edition to my third home…San Juan, Puerto Rico! I usually spend a week in PR each year, but in 2008, I never got around to it! So, needless to say, I’m very “homesick” and the subarctic Chicago weather isn’t helping either! Anywho, in honor of “la isla,” I’m staring at vacation pieces that I would take with me on my next trip (if my budget would allow)!

Anthem of the Week – Big Pun feat. Tony Sunshine – “100%”

This song has been a staple on my playlist since high school! I had the biggest crush on Tony Sunshine back in the day. This song/video just never gets old…

Happy Monday!

Chicago Ice

Hey, everyone…Hope you had a great weekend! It was absolutely too doggone cold in Chicago to do ANYTHING! For the most part, I spent the weekend in bed and surfing the internet. I was able to find a few jobs to apply for, and research some topics for the blog/Examiner.

Also, I got a chance to watch some episodes of “Real Chance of Love” for the first time! Woooowwwww…That’s all I can say about that show. For real, Real?!?!? *shaking my head* Anyways, I hope you enjoy this week’s posts…I’m off to work on some cover letters 🙂

Celebrity Spotlight: Ludacris

Celebrities deserve some shine for all of the good works that they do. I’m dedicating the first celebrity spotlight to Chris “Ludacris” Bridges for three reasons…

1. He kicked off his “LudaCrismas in Toyland” initiative here in Chicago on Tuesday

2. He has been one of the most consistent philanthropic entertainers. Since 2001, the Ludacris Foundation has donated over $750,000 to nonprofit organizations.

3. He looks TOO sharp in the photo above (taken at a recent shoot for Michigan Avenue Magazine).

LudaCrismas will visit New York on Thursday and Miami on Friday before returning to Atlanta to host an event on Saturday. The Ludacris Foundation partnered with community organizations in each city to put together an event for children to enjoy food, entertainment, and games in a festive holiday environment! These Christmas parties are apart of the LudaCares Initiative which is dedicated to supporting kids and families in need during the holiday season

If you would like to show your support for this foundation and learn more the programs offered, please head on over to the website. Go LUDA!

P.S. “LudaCrismas” is not to be confused with “LudaChristmas,” the holiday event featured on 30 Rock…In case you were wondering!

Sears Wants You to Grant Our Heroes' Wishes

While watching Saturday night TV, I saw a commercial encouraging Americans to support our military families through Sears’ “Heroes at Home” Wish Registry. The Registry allows military families to write their stories and create a wish list of items that they would love to have this Christmas. Some of the stories made me misty-eyed and made me wish that I had enough money to buy a million items for the families!

When you visit Sears.com/wish, you can read stories and view the wish lists, make a general donation, write a note of encouragement, and much more! I’m assuming that the registry closes on Christmas, but I could be wrong! If I find out otherwise, I’ll update the post!

Sears is also donating $250,000 to the USO and another $250,000 to Rebuilding Together, a national nonprofit that rehabilitates the homes of low-income families (particularly the elderly and disabled).

I’m getting all tingly as I type…I love the giving spirit 🙂

Shop, save, and give at We-Care.com

Man, the Internet, for all its ills, keeps getting better! I received an email asking me to check out We-Care.com. It’s a website that allows you to shop at some of your favorite stores and a percentage of funds are automatically donated to an organization of your choice.

I took a look on there earlier, and there are some GREAT stores on there! I found Bebe, Betsey Johnson, Steve Madden, Macy’s, Best Buy, etc! The site is pretty easy to navigate and they even offer coupons/discounts for some stores!

AKIRA keeps on giving

Tomorrow (12/2), AKIRA (1814 W. Chicago) will host its second philanthropic event of the holiday season. During the Holiday Shopping Extravaganza, 15 percent of purchases will benefit the Lyric Opera House. The evening will feature complimentary cocktails and a silent auction from 6-9pm.
