This morning, I was lamenting about the amount of money that I spend on food each week. I try to control my habits, but I can always be found grabbing a Chipotle here, Dunkin’ Donuts there, and a happy hour cocktail there. Of course, these “baller” cycles are related to pay periods…The days right after getting paid? I’m making it rain. The days right before getting paid? I’m the biggest cheapo. Everytime I go on [...]

Queen Bey has partnered with Hamburger Helper and Feeding America to help fight childhood hunger in America. The goal of the “Show Your Helping Hand” campaign is to help Feeding America deliver 3.5 million meals to food banks across the country. According to Feeding America, one in eight Americans struggles with hunger. And, here are some additional statistics: Households with children have nearly double the hunger rates of families without children. More than 40 percent [...]
I’m trying to get better about doing recaps for the events that I attend…Here goes! In the past 24 hours, I’ve had the chance to take part in two GREAT events benefitting the Greater Chicago Food Depository! Wednesday night, I attended Heineken with a Heart, a bar event held at the always swanky Crimson Lounge. I got there towards the end of the event so I only heard the last two minutes of the amazing [...]
If you’re going shopping this weekend, you should check out the stores of Gap, Inc. This weekend is Family and Friends weekend at the Gap, Banana Republic, and Old Navy. Not only are they giving you 30% off your purchases, they will be donating 5% of sales to one of six charities. That’s right! You can contribute to the following organizations: The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Teach for America Feeding America Boys and Girls Club [...]
I know that title seems impossible, but let me explain. When you donate $1 to Feeding America (formerly known as America’s Second Harvest), that dollar can help provide 16 bowls of food to hungry American families. Now, Kraft Foods is matching all donations, up to $250,000! So, does my title make sense now? Before: $1 = 16 Bowls Now: $1 = 32 Bowls!!! I donated $5 this morning…Feels good knowing that my Starbucks money helped [...]
Everyone knows that Chicago winters are NO joke. Said winters tend to inspire tons of eating and tea-sipping! One of my personal favs is obviously soup! When I was working, I used to always stop by Soupbox on Chicago Ave or the soup stand in Foodlife. Yum… Okay, now for the free soup part! The Hideout (1354 W. Wabansia) will be serving free soup EVERY Wednesday from 5-8p. They aren’t charging a cover, and you [...]
The Greater Chicago Food Depository is still accepting donations for its holiday food drive. You have until January 3rd to drop off non-perishable items at your local Dominick’s store. The economy has placed a greater strain on family resources and agencies like the GCFD are reporting an increase in need citywide. So, please do your part and pick up some extra food (if you can) and drop it in the bins at Dominick’s! -kb
I’ve been doing a LOT of things while out here in DC. I’m talking shopping, sightseeing, volunteering, sleeping, etc. And, I’ve also been eating out every day. So, imagine my delight when I learned that a lot of the restaurants that I’ve been visiting are participating in this week’s Great American Dineout. The weeklong nationwide program kicked off on Sunday the 21st and goes until the 28th! During the Great American Dineout, participating restaurants donate [...]
Chicagoans are unabashedly affectionate about many things: our sports teams, the lakefront, the skyline, and so on! But, we especially love our food! So, I thought I would use this post to talk about some ways you can indulge your tastebuds while giving back! Green City Market Chefs’ BBQ Festival on Thursday, July 17th will feature over 50 of Chicago’s top chefs preparing tastings for hungry festival goers. Attendees will also be able to sample different beers and [...]
